Digital Painting, 2015
Summer Palace is not a real book (or at least, this one isn't). I created the digital painting Summer Palace, Beijing, China and the haziness of the mountains and the sharpness of the dock made me think mystery novel: that which is close is clear, but there is a lot yet to be explored and uncovered. Nhuom D. Ploom is, of course, a play on "nom de plume".
The choice of cropping puts focus on the mountains at the horizon, with the full structure of the dock and the sunset (and its reflection) just out of view. The title and author name frame the mountains as even more of a focus. My thought was that the characters in the book direct their attention to distant possibilities, rather than fully exploring their immediate surroundings and companions.
