Digital Painting, 2013

Creator Commentary

Stop Calling is an exploration of social anxiety born of verbal and emotional abuse. I constructed the comic entirely using black or white digital paintbrushes and a digital eraser. This choice was based on the extremes that occur within abuse, from the abuse itself to the honeymoon phase of the cycle where the abuser is incredibly sweet. I tended to use white to denote the abuse and abusers in the comic: this is partially in an effort to change how white/black and light/dark are used in Western culture (the words and the values are both coded such that light/white is good and dark/black is bad) and partially in response to that coding and how abuse sometimes flies under the radar.
